Help request, 850 Rocker Torque Spec.

Postby PaulB » Mon Aug 18, 2014 1:10 am

I re-torqued my head and rocker assembly, and reset the valve lash.
From my Haynes manual, I have always torqued my 4 rocker nuts to 14.5 (15) lb.
Then, tonight I found a note on pg 273 of my BLUE Shop Manual (Coupe section) that says:
"NOTE - Rocker shaft stud nuts must be drawn up with 36.2 ft.lbs (5 kgm) of torque."

Can anyone shed some light here, I just put this job to rest and am not looking to run out and do it again,
BUT, this is more than twice the value that I've always used. Will this cause valve spacing to go out of spec?
Will the rocker nuts even take 36 ft lb.? That's more than the head bolts have on them.
Thanks in advance,
+Paul

Answer: It depends.

It appears that the Shop Manual and Haynes are both correct.

From this source: http://vintage.mitchell1.com/PClubData/ ... 735130.pdf
On the last page it can be seen that the 843cc Coupe' 100GC.000 Rocker Nuts spec. is 36 ft./lb.
It calls out 12 ft./lb for all other 850 engine variants:
100G.000 843cc Standard
100G.002 843cc Super
100G3.002 817cc Sedan
100GBC.040 903cc Coupe
100GBS.040 903cc Spider

....That'll teach me to second guess myself after I should have gone to bed. : )
