So what do I do when 13" tires no longer exist?

Postby Prima13 » Mon Mar 26, 2012 8:35 pm

It's getting harder and harder to find good 13" tires. I got a perfect set of CD-16s last year and it's going to be a shame to have to put them away if I can't find tires. But if it comes to that, I want to be prepared.

I see Spiders all the time with 14" and 15" wheels. What would be the best size to upgrade to? I'm not interested in putting modern-looking wheels on the car ... I'd prefer that it look at least close to being period-correct.

Thoughts anyone?

Hey Jody:

There are still 185/60/13's filtering into the country. As soon as they are posted available on xweb, they get snatched up, creating a sense of demand.

I see that 13's will be available for awhile, still.

That being said, late model spides came with 14's and if upgrading, I would go that route first.

best regards,

Which brings up a good question...why do folks buy 185/60 tires when they aren't anywhere near the circumference of the original tire size? Messes with the speedometer, doesn't it? 215/60 would be about as close as you can get in 60 series width.

Because I neglected my front suspension, one of my four Yokohama Avid T4 was ruined. The size for my 1973 124 Spider is 185/70/13 and I believe that it's correct. The other three, although 8 years old are in excellent shape with <5k miles on them, or so. I see Tire Rack has Sumitomo HTR T4 and Kumho Solus KR21 available. I'm curious about the Sumitomo T4; is it possible that it's the same tire as the my (no longer available) Yokohama since they both have T4 in their model numbers? Coincidence?

14" wheels were an option on the later cars, and are more or less correct.

Here they are as seen on my 81 Spider.

The 15 inch wheels Mark Allison sells are very nice. http://www.allisonsautomotive.com/products.html scroll down to the wheels.

Otherwise, the stock 14" wheels are just fine. I have Falken 912s 195/60/14s on my '81 (just like the Cromodora turbo wheels on sjmst2's car), but like the look of 205/60/14s.

But the wheels make the car, so get the nicest ones you can afford.

Jody:: I purchased Hankook tires fro Tony's Auto Service in the South HIlls, Pgh Pa. If interested call me or ask Meghan for my contact info. From what I remember, they were reasonably priced.
