Foam rubber in Fiat Spider top boot?

Post by mcsands » Mon Feb 06, 2006 8:22 am

Dear Fiat People,
I've noticed on the underside of my Spider's top boot, there's an extra piece of fabric sewn over the area that covers the top latches.
Is there supposed to be foam rubber or anything else fitted between the two pieces of fabric to smooth out the boot's appearance? My boot has nothing but the extra pieces of fabric sewn on, but I detect what looks like old, dried specs of foam rubber near a seam.
Thank you,
Hook 'em Horns!

Mike:
Yes there can be padding there. There seems to be some variation whether oem or aftermarket or by year or loss of foam. I would find some similar material to the boot and double up over the latches on the underside.

Dear Ron,
Thank you for the response. The extra fabric is open on both sides and seems almost custom-made for sliding in some foam rubber. I want my top boot to look as smooth as the ones you see in the parts catalog photos. My '71 Buick Skylark convertible had foam rubber glued to the underside of the boot from the factory.
Thanks again,
