Spare Tire Kit

Post by janet70 » Sat Dec 07, 2013 7:03 pm

Has anyone had the spare tire kit installed under their 500?

I have. What questions do you have? In addition to the spare tire kit, I also installed a hitch receiver so I can put a bike rack on the back of the car. The dealer installed the tire kit, but this weekend I had to uninstall the tire and the hoist to mount the hitch receiver, so I got a pretty good look around.

The spare tire kit consists of:
. the spare tire (of course)
. a hoist to lift it up to the chassis
. a couple of brackets that the wheel fits into to hold it in the correct position
. a jack and handle

There are threaded holes in the chassis to attach everything so it all just bolts up.

There is a plug in the floor of the cargo area that you remove to access the hoist mechanism, and you use the jack handle to lower the wheel from there. Once lowered, you can unscrew the nut that holds the wheel to the fitting at the end of the hoist cable and slide the fitting through the central hole in the wheel to release the wheel. It's all pretty straightforward and it only takes a few seconds to lower the wheel to the ground.

When I got it installed, the dealer left the original flat kit (the air compressor and sealant) under the seat, so I guess I can withstand two flats at a time, as long as one of them can be fixed by the original flat kit.

Thanks for the description of the spare tire kit. I am just a little uneasy going about without a spare in the event a tire is too damaged for the "Slime" to work.
Thanks!
