wiper motor

Post by mjohnson47 » Wed Aug 13, 2014 9:16 pm

The wiper motor in my 1982 Fiat X1/9 is shot. My mechanic says he has to send it out to be repaired - $450+ for the motor plus installation. Does this sound right? Is there another choice other than not driving it in the rain? Thank you, Marilyn

I would try to DIY that thing. Assuming the bearing in the motor are good then it's going to just need brushes. Finding them will likely be the hardest part, but there isn't a whole lot to these motors. Here's my take on these kinds of things; try it yourself. The first guy who tried to do something had no directions either. Just take it slow, get a nice big clear area in case little bits and pieces come flying out (like the springs from the brushes), etc. But you gotta figure that $450 is going to include his time to remove and reinstall, send off the piece to get fix, markup on the fix, etc. I suspect that the actual price for a rebuild is half that number (in case you decide to go that route).

Just a little digging, found some threads that will likely shed light on a DIY rebuild
