Delivery of Fiat 500 Prima Edizione to a Florida Studio

In November 2010 I pre-ordered a new Fiat 500 Prima Edizione via the Fiat website. On March 1st 2011, I was contacted by representatives of Fiat (888-242-6342) in regards to delivery of the 500. As I'm spending my winter in South Florida I need to select a "studio" to handle the delivery. Unfortunately at this time only three studios in the USA are open but I was told that delivery could take place in a temporary facility or I could request home delivery at no extra charge. I was informed that FIAT would be paying for transportation and any dealer fees so the MSRP of $19,500 would be intact. I was warned that before I choose a studio to call and ensure that no additional charges would be added. After visiting some future studios here and speaking to the very uninformed sales people, I also wanted to make sure I would choose a studio that had some knowledge and enthusiasm for the cars they were going to be selling. I contacted the following Florida studios:

FT. MYERS, FL 33912-1943
I was told they did not think an extra charge would be applied but could not say for sure. The Fiat sales manage; Marzio seemed enthusiastic and fairly knowladgabe.

MIAMI, FL 331272
This studio has not even broke ground so it could be a long time before they are ready. My visit to them was extremely disappointing and frustrating. The sales people are very aggressive but not very knowledgeable. The mention of Fiat elicited a look of confusion. Not recommended.

TAMARAC, FL 33321-6412

Two dealerships with the same owner. The sales people I spoke to were knowledgeable and helpful but were confused about any extra charges on top of MSRP. I was told they always charge a "dealers fee" on top of MSRP and that it would not be fair to the other buyers not to charge me. To be honest it's not fair to charge any of us with the extra fee on top of MSRP. They said they would have to check and call me back. Upon hearing back from them they did confirm that there is a $595.00 fee to delivery the car added to the MSRP of $19,500. I was told this information came directly from Jim Arrigo, the owner. Not recommended.

After speaking to the above dealers I was starting to get quite frustrated by extra charges or the lack of knowledge. Tim, at Sunset was a nice surprise! He immediately confirmed that is no extra charge over MSRP and did hear of some "Miami locations" were do so. He agreed with me that this is not a good way to build a strong relationship with a customer. I reminded him that many of the Fiat Prima Edizione customers would be in the market again when Alfa Romeo launches and we would remember who treated us right. He agreed. Knowledgeable, enthusiastic and no extra charges - Highly Recommended.

Great to know. I thought when Fiat specified no haggling it would also stop the dealers from gouging. I understand tax and title fees, but more destination charges should not be added.

Hi Fred. Want me to deliver it to LI for you?

Just kidding...

But I do have a serious question. Would you mind if I asked what the "all-in" price is that you were quoted by these dealers? I made many phone calls myself today to local (PA/NJ/MD) area dealers to try to see which will be adding fees and which will not. Obviously, tax, title, tags, etc. will factor in, as will (most likely) destination charges. Waiting on answers from most, but we can (eventually) compare notes. If this is better taken offline, you have my email address, and likely my cell number as well.

Thanks much,

The MSRP of $19,500 is supposed to include everything but sales tax. That is what FIAT has said. Even delivery via trailer to your home is included if you want that. So, do as I did, simply call each dealer and tell them you know MSRP is 19,500 and are they adding any charges on top of that. If they say yes, then tell them you will select another studio for delivery. Frankly in this economy they are lucky to get full MSRP price and they should be very happy with that and not try to rip off enthusiastic fans who've waited almost 30 years for the marque to return.

Shaun, I'll be happy to come visit when I drive past you on the way back home to NY this spring with my 500.

I better check with my dealer. If they want to charge more than what is supposed to be charged, I'll have to find a dealer in another state!

Fiat of Kirkland spoke to our local club in January. We asked point blank if they were going to try to charge more than MSRP.

We were told 'no' and that there is enough profit included in MSRP.

But you know how it goes and we shall see, keeping my fingers crossed!

Point blank, don't pay any extra charges. Remind the dealer that you will be buying an Abarth or an Alfa Romeo down the road and you will remember them in a good or bad light when that time comes. If you fail to convince them, purchase from another dealer! Don't forget free home delivery option.

Good report, Fred. Fiat is trying hard, but in the end, they are working with independent dealers. Some get it right, and some are usual snake oil salesman.

Here's the email I got in response to my question about pricing:

Dear Denise,

I recieved your e-mail you had sent to Greg Eaton concerning the talk about P.E. mark-ups at other FIAT Studios. I can promise you Hendrick FIAT of Cary will not be one of these Studios. Not today, tomorrow or next year. We are exclusively no haggle set pricing. Expect no other charges to be assessed to your Prima aside of tax,tag and title.

You are currently 1 of 6 proud future P.E. customers who we have the oppourtunity to deliver the car you have been long waiting for.

If you hear of any one across the forums or through your networks that are being price marked up on their P.E. or any FIAT Please have them call me or Greg directly and we can make sure they are properly taken care of. We can arrange home delivery and shipping to those customer in extended range areas.

I want to thank you once again for allowing Hendrick FIAT of Cary the opportunity to earn your business.
