Best version/year Fulvia to get?

Hello all,
This summer I'm planing on picking up a Fulvia in Europe. I'm wondering what version or year is best? Sure, I'd love a HF but it's not in my budget. I'm leaning toward a 1st series 1.3 rally edition. Any opinions?

I assume you're talking about a Coupè and not a Sport (Zagato).

If so, all I'd say is to steer clear of the Fulvia '3' (sometimes called an S3). Aside from the badging, you can spot a Fulvia '3' by the white gauge faces and the black plastic steering wheel. After the Fiat takeover, the '3' saw some cost-cutting measures that don't help its reliability (or its aesthetics).

Other than that, I'd just shop for condition. I've driven a 1.2, a S1 1.3, an S2 1.3, and there's so little difference between the variants that it comes down to personal preference and--not least--to what's available in good condition. The early 1.2s were all steel, which means they're the slowest. But they're also the best built (a friend has an all-steel 1.2, and the door shut would embarrass a mid-60s Mercedes). There's no real power difference between a 1.3 and a 1.3S, nor between an S1 1.3S and an S2 1.3S.

S1s have a 4-speed, while S2s have a 5-speed, but in either case top gear is direct--no overdrive either way. Personally, I prefer the more vertical shift lever of the S2 5-speed, but the 4-speed is a little more precise. The ventilation is a little better in an S2. Conventional wisdom says that the S2 Girling brakes are better than the S1 Dunlops, but my S1 brakes are more than adequate to lock the wheels at any speed on any surface (which is the test for braking capability).

Yes, coupe not Zagato... not yet anyway.
I do prefer a 5 speed and I'm familiar with griling breaks as they are on my Dino. I will take a look at the other site you mentioned.
You talk about "all steel"? Were some coupes aluminum??
Do they all have leaf springs?
How easy are parts to get?

The earliest 1.2 Coupès were all steel: body shell, doors, hood & trunk lid. To improve performance, even before the 1.3 engine was introduced, Lancia reduced weight by changing to aluminum doors, hood, and trunk lid. These remained aluminum throughout Series 1 production. Series 2 returned to all steel. But the body shell is steel on both S1 & S2 Coupès. The only all-aluminum Fulvias are the first 911 Fulvia Sport (Zagato). But even then the all-aluminum bodies only weigh 15 kg less that Sports with steel body shells and aluminum doors & lids.

If you want a 5-speed, that will mean an all-steel car, as you'll be looking at an S2. The only S1 with a 5-speed is the 1.6HF.

All Fulvias have leaf springs: transverse leaf at fornt, and semi-elliptics at the rear.

Parts for standard Coupès are relatively easy to source, with only a few exceptions. Some HF parts are tricky to locate, but virtually everything can be found.

What about the various versions of S1 and S2? Is it worth seeking out a 1.3 Ralley or an S version? What about engine displacement? It appears that 1.6 cars are very hard to come by - are they worth the extra charge?
