Semi Automatic trannys are NOTHING new....My 1953 Chrysler Windsor was a "semi auto". It had what was called a fluid drive transmission,which utilized a "fluid coupling" (something similar to a converter without torque multiplication) linked to a conventional mechanical clutch. The shifter was a conventional "Three on the tree". You would only need to push the clutch in to engage the transmission once, the first time pulling out after starting the engine or to engage reverse .You would select the third gear position on the shifter to initially pull out from a stop, But after the initial engagement you could then roll to a stop without pushing in the clutch again to disengage the trans (the fluid coupling took over that task).
I used to really confuse the hell out my buddies when I came rolling to a stop without pushing in the clutch! At any stop after the initial engagement, in order to pull out you would simply push down on the gas pedal and go (just like todays autos). When it was time to up-shift to second gear you would lift your foot off the gas pedal momentarily and listen for a "click" (that was the trans up-shifting), then do the same thing to shift to third . Coming to another stop you would hear the trans make two clicks as you slowed down,shifting back into second and then first. One more neat thing about this transmission was (if you wanted to) you could just drive the car like a conventional three speed manual ! :?

I had a 74 SuperBeetle with a autostick. It was kinda fun for about 2 weeks then it got old as the "super" wasnt "superfast". It was noticeably slower than its manually counterpart which, in a bug, isnt a good thing. A friend had a 911 with the same setup.

In the VW there was no clutch just a stick on the floor you moved like a normal manually just without a clutch to push in.

i remember that Bug! we trashed one when we drove over a man hole without a cover.... long story, don't ask.

and, isn't Porsche coming out with a new 7 speed semi-auto tranny next year?

i beleive that FIAT also had somthing similar to the Autostick (maybe in the 600's ?)
Renualt had an automatic clutch in the 4CV, the drivers hand weight on the shifter activated an elecrtomagnetic clutch. Just grab, pull and release !

Lots of cool old stuff out there !
